I love flying on domestic flights at regional airports when overseas. The airports are smaller, unique, and often have very different and sometimes nerve-wracking ways of operating. You can’t always be sure of what will happen, but the one thing you can be sure of is that it is very likely you will see or experience something unexpected. My experience at Husein Sastranegara (Bandung, Indonesia) airport is one that I am not likely to forget.
Husein Sastranegara is considered quite modern and compared to some of the smaller regional airports I’ve visited it really is. For a busy airport like this one, it is missing a few interesting amenities – such as any sort of electronic gate information. You just have to listen really closely as they call out flight information on a loudspeaker.
One thing that I found very interesting was the amount of traffic (both planes and people) on the tarmac. To board your plane you have to walk across the tarmac and you can easily board the wrong plane too if you aren’t paying close attention. For an airport with as much traffic as it has, that’s a little surprising, and perhaps dangerous?
Husein Sastranegara has only one terminal, making it pretty crowded. It’s almost impossible to walk in the terminal (or tarmac) without tripping over something or someone.
The unexpected part of this experience (besides all the chaos on the tarmac) happened as I was walking up the steps to board the plane. I attempted to take a selfie with the Lion Air logo and all the people walking around the tarmac when the man behind me offered to take the photo for me. Embarrassed, I turned to thank him and said no. It turned out to be the PILOT! We chatted briefly in the line behind all the passengers until it was time for him to go to the cockpit. He was very friendly and even offered to assist some of the struggling passengers with their luggage!
I was nervous in the beginning but the flight was smooth and I made it safely to my destination with an experience to remember!
